“It’s been extremely freeing and extremely cool to know that I’ve made it out of a dire situation and that I lived to tell about it. The title of Waylon Payne’s upcoming second album is a mouthful. When the test pressing of my album came last week and I was able to sit down in my bedroom and drop the needle, it was a whole new thing. And you sing that you have trust that it will open again. “I thought it was too long. In “Dangerous Criminal,” Payne takes a look inward at his propensity toward addiction, and how easy it is to fall back into those destructive patterns. He hung onto it as an album title, but figured it probably wouldn’t fly. And right now? [Laughs] And I didn’t have any money to get home, so I stayed there and ended up making it — that’s basically all I can tell you about that. Being a dick, so she fired me. Do we ever. And I was not going to step on it. “And it’s true. All rights reserved. I love her, love her deeply.

Yeah, what makes it special, and why do you like to be part of it? Leading off the new tracks is the haunting “All the Trouble,” a blues-evoking number that begs for a little relief from one’s mountain of problems. That song’s about my father and my buddy Edward and his son Lake. I think it was because when I was on stage, I was always with my mother. Pushed back after an initial release date in the spring and with a new title, Payne’s epically named Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me finally arrives on September 11 (ironically, it’s exactly one year to the day after I spent time with Payne driving around Nashville for this profile). Early 20s, maybe? She’s been like a sister to me for many, many years.

We had a nice moment over Christmas and Shelby was responsible for bringing that relationship back together, too. She did sessions when she was pregnant with me there, and I was a baby there, and I was a toddler there.

How do you view yourself now that you’ve come out the other side? '”, The resulting album chronicles Payne’s journey into and back out of hell, dealing with his addiction and his experiences as a gay man in direct, honest fashion. His father became a longtime picker for Willie Nelson; his mother toured with Waylon Jennings. I was playing with Shelby [on tour promoting I Am Shelby Lynne] and maybe I was drinking and doing too many drugs. There was some sex abuse that had happened. I was a construction worker, I was a short order cook, I’ve done a lot of things, pal.

There’s a different vibe in Nashville now than there was in the ‘90s — and of course, the ‘90s were different than the ‘70s, too. It was pretty interesting to sit in the same spot that she stood and sing all of these songs and do this album. We didn’t make any money, but that’s what I did.

The record received critical acclaim, but by then Payne was in a full-blown spiral of drug abuse, flitting around East Nashville drug dens and staying up for days at a time while high on meth. Man, we came off the road on March 13, and then the entire nation locked down. Payne penned the song with Adam Wright and Lee Ann Womack, who originally cut it for her album The Lonely, the Lonesome, and the Gone. At what point did you realize that you enjoyed being on stage? Yeah, that was around the same time, too. These days he’s in a much better spot, though many of the trials and tribulations of his 20s are woven throughout the narrative of his new album, Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher and Me.

[I’m saying,] I know that you’re my mother and I know that you’re the one that gave me life. What is it about that writing relationship that makes it click? I guess part of the title is a tribute to him. Holy smokes this is so much fun to watch. But he stopped me and said, “Man, remember that and promise me you’ll name the album that one day.” He passed away, so he never heard the record. “I believe in this record because it helped me live and it’s my thoughts over the past 25 years,” he says. And that was it. If I’m part of the Nashville community now, then I’ll take that. Were you able to take part in those kind of things during that time? Want more Rolling Stone? Like I said, once it bites you, you’re bitten. BGS: What do you remember about the vibe in the studio while making this record? The album unfolds over four acts, each its own compelling, vivid dissection of Payne’s journey, from his descent into drugs to clawing his way back to the world of the living. Ashley, Miranda, and I started writing together four or five years ago on a regular basis, then Ashley and Aaron Raitiere and I write together a lot. You put this record out three songs at a time, but when I listened to it in its entirety, it struck me that there’s a theme of moving forward, and sometimes outright optimism, that comes through. One day he looked up at me and he goes, “I need you to come up with something as awesome as ‘Silver Tongued Devil.’” I was feeling no pain and blurted out “old blue eyes, the harlot, the queer, the pusher, and me.” It literally came out of nowhere.

I don’t know if I necessarily hang out with a lot of folks. We want to hear from you! What do you like about the Nashville music community now? And he is really the biggest reason that I have comfort in being able to stand out there alone and do it these days,” Payne says of his producer, who is also Womack’s husband and producer.

Can you tell us about the meaning behind it?It’s the last line of one of the last songs on the album. One of Payne’s friends in their self-described “drug den” would regularly sing Kris Kristofferson’s “The Silver Tongued Devil and I,” prompting Payne to spit out his wordy phrase one day. Everything I love about music started with LP records. That’s all I’m really trying to do, buddy, I’m trying to offer some hope and maybe a different viewpoint that people have heard before.”. You take it. The opening three tracks were released in mid-June. Oh yeah, exactly. His father, Jody Payne, was a longtime guitarist for Willie Nelson, and Payne’s godfather—and namesake—is Waylon Jennings.

I developed a drug problem and it was pretty much his fault. “Those are the things that I have been writing about for years, that if you just take a little time to listen, they’ve always been there,” he says. Old Blue Eyes was a buddy of mine, and not to romanticize this at all, but he was my drug dealer, and when you’re doing drugs, it’s a weird world, but we bonded. I would go to work at six o’clock at night, and by going to work, I mean we would show up down there and we’d start on one side of Broadway and we would sing on one side, go through Printers Alley, and then down the other side. He says maybe that’s all right — the work, like its striking title, is capable of leaving a mark on its own. That’s one of the biggest things about this record: Even though it’s about tragic situations, I still made it out.
