If you like Serling you have to give this series a view. And - trying hard to avoid a spoiler here - did anybody else watch 'Little Black Bag' and think 'They're not really going to show him doing that, are they?'. If unlike me you have never heard of this show, I can let you in on a little secret, it is similar to The Outer Limits? Rod Serling presents tales of horror illustrated in various paintings. I loved Roddy Macdowell and was surprised to find him in an episode where he wasnt cast as comedy relief. While there are some goofy episodes this series does seem to be geared to a slightly more adult audience than Twilight Zone. Night Gallery was Rod Serling's follow-up to The Twilight Zone, airing on NBC from 1970 to 1973. For those like myself (or older) who grew up in the 70's, little explanation as to who Rod Serling was should be needed. and the view of monsters, ghosts and horror etc are a bit outdated now. Twilight Zone was great but Night Gallery was too, I bought this being a fan of Serling and found it to be both riveting, unnerving and scary without being in your face about it. . This is an absolutely fantastic price for a DVD BOX SET of this quality AND standards. I'm a long time fan of "The Twilight Zone," but had never seen Serling's later series. I loved 'Eyes', 'The House' and 'Little Black Bag' but felt I was just marking time till the next story while watching 'The Nature of the Enemy' because I perfer psychological spooking to sci fi.
i believe rod's first pitch was to make this show in a wax museum....but when the studio turned it down, he kept the 'art' idea kicking around until the concept of having paintings formulated in his head....and thus the night gallery was born! For those thrill seekers of younger generations however, a few words may indeed be in order...while Twilight Zone is still something of a household name, these days Night Gallery receives a bit less notoriety. / A Nazi officer on the run in South America seeks to escape his past once and for all by finding escape in an idyllic painting. Serling functioned both as the on-air host of Night Gallery and as a major contributor of scripts, although he did not have the same control of content and tone as he did on Twilight Zone.
Some nicely creepy ones e.g. it is a throw-back to simpler days when the world was a much different place....cars were made of metal instead of plastic....gas was 60 cents a gallon....and art was supposed to make you think.
