It took him three-and-a-half months to write the book, which at the time he named Death of a City, and it was published in Poland in 1946 (Szpilman’s Warsaw 2, The Art of 2). Two days after the move, the German soldiers decided to visit the house. Soon enough after the beginning of war, the Gestapo took over their house. After the book had been banned according to a Newsweek Interview, the book was republished in 1998 (1). Although Szpilman had experienced things he never again wanted to experience, he wanted to write a book about his life in the Warsaw Ghetto so that people would have something to read and remind them of the atrocities of war (The Story 7).
The whole Szpilman family, along with all the other Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, had been forced to wear armbands bearing the Star of David and then move to the Warsaw Ghetto, and if they refused, they would be shot (The Pianist).
This story shows that if a person wants it, getting through a hard situation is possible. The Nazis made them German and forced the men to fight in the army. Her story is extraordinary and it makes a person think twice about life. That was when the real panic began. This day was also the liberation of the city of Radom. The leader of the Radom Gestapo, who was known for his extreme cruelty, moved in forcing Halina Szpilman, along with her mother and sister, to move into a one-room apartment that was constantly observed by the Gestapo. Mrs. Szpilman told us that when she would be out of the street with a few of her friends, she would pretend to have a book under her arm (books were banned) to provoke the Gestapo.

In it, there is a plaque with the names of those tortured.
