We just looked around outside. The exhibits are great and the people are very attentive and friendly. As you walk up the trail that was the towpath, you'll find a collection of buildings that were a part of the Port Byron lock environment. If you're traveling east on the NY State Thruway, and have some time to kill, this is a must-see for anyone interested in history, engineering, the Canal itself and/or preservation in general. Nice historical tour of the exhibits. This museum tells the story of the Erie Canal. Happened to stop on the Thruway and had a delightful time. May be our new tradition. Without going into an elaborate history of the Erie Canal (tough for me to do) the original "Clinton's Ditch" was "4 and 40," that is, 4 feet deep and 40 feet wide, which soon became too small.

The lady in the welcome center was great and had a wealth of information. Definitely check it out! To our disappointment we got there too late. The only access is off the Thruway eastbound. The Erie Canal Museum there is quite good and worth a visit. When heading east, we passed this park and decided to stop on the way back west. The staff is welcoming. There is no charge and it is handicap accessible. You can access this facility from route 31 in Port Byron, or from the I-90 (NYS Thruway) in the eastbound direction only, near milepost 309. For years and years and years an abandoned lock from the Erie Canal system stood on the south side of I-90 East at Port Byron. In addition to viewing a surviving Erie Canal lock up-close and personal, visitors can tour the original tavern, stables and blacksmith shop. We were looking for a place to walk our dog. Then in the rear, there's a little complex of four buildings that have been very nicely restored, including a saloon/boarding house that dates back to the end of the canal era that has some nifty original items in it. And, tucked in the back side of the park, a dog walk (and dogs are allowed through the visitor's center as well).
i went to the info desk to ask about wifi access and stood right at the desk, within two feet from these two staffers who were so engrossed in their own personal conversation that they ignored me completely. Check when it opens before you go. There’s a large sign, you don’t have to get off the Thruway, and it’s FREE. I drove past this over the years and the remains of the lock was all to be seen. This lock was built as a part of the newly widened Erie Canal and used until about 1917 when the canal was widened once again, and also rerouted to the north which bypassed Port Byron entirely.
Docents were on hand who knew all of the details. My toddler loved running around the lock and exploring the replica buildings of what the area used to look like.
