It will drive a 55-grain bullet to over 3800 fps, and that short bullet at that velocity will provide enough hydraulic shock to plant a coyote where it stands. 22 mag is a harder hitting round but the 17HMR will get the job done too. Try that with a .223 or .22-250. The .22 Hornet has the potential, especially when handloaded, to handle anything from a squirrel up to coyotes. For gophers, I’m less concerned about energy and more concerned about Maximum Point Blank Range, or MPBR for short. What has hampered the little cartridge … For gophers, I use a 3″ (1.5″ up or down from center) measure because that’s usually good enough to do the job. Another vote for the .22 mag.
i have taken coyotes to over 200 yards with my .22 Hornet. My preferred load is a 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip behind 7.4 grains of 2400 using a small pistol primer, something you can get away with when using the Hornet.
The 17, I'm sure, has it's attributes, I personally don't think coyote is one of it's strong points! With the capability to propel a 55-grain bullet to 3000 fps, and equipped with a twist rate fully capable of using the heavier 77- and 80-grain bullets, the .223 Remington in any gun makes excellent coyote medicine. For coyotes, I want more energy on target with a rimfire.
